Weekly Online Journal Entry

How can I tell what I think until I see what I say? --E.M. Forster

Every week you will be responsible for posting a reply to an online journal question. This response needs to be at least one full paragraph (minimum of 5-6 sentences, no more than one full page). Being an online journal, this is somewhat informal in nature but you do need to use complete sentences, watch your spelling, and fully develop your thoughts. Make sure your responses are adhering to the posted rules or they will be deleted. Be open, be creative, be yourself.

Consider the following quotation:

Don't do whatever you like; like whatever you do. --Anne M. Jennings

Describe an instance where you have applied this advice in your own life or a situation in which you could give it a try. In the picture, see how an ordinary chore like walking the dog can become a great adventure. Life is full of amazing possibilities. It is our attitude that can lift us up or hold us back if we let it. Consider how our attitudes can be changed if we will try to see the potential in any given situation. An online journal, for instance ....

If you just do things you like then there won't be much to do. Life is full of things you might not like. Sometimes though they can be actually really fun. I used to not like talking in front of classes at all. Now because i decided to do it once it doesn't bother me. So now its easy and I don't mind it anymore.

It's not always about doing what you like to do. It's about liking what sometimes you have to do. Say your parents make you wash the dishes every night. If you complain and gripe about doing the dishes it will probably take you longer to get the job done. If you just do it with a positive attitude you can get them done in no time and still have time to watch TV, do home work, or whatever you LIKE to do in your free time.

Thinking about this it brings me to a great story. Speaking of chores i have to wash the cars pretty much every weekend. I start to appreciate this because I am able to drive them both whenever. It is considered a chore but in my opinion it is a privallege. So you can make the best of what you gotta do with a positive mind set

On most weekends my dad makes me mow the yard. I always use to hate it. I never wanted to do it because it was hott and boring. I changed how i looked at it. I know see it as an opportunity to get a tan.

I can relate to this advice in several ways. I play softball for my team and for myself. I do my best and put my whole heart into it and I work hard to be a leader. But, I have noticed that many girls play in order to please others. Playing softball is my life, I believe that you should only play if your heart is in it and if you really want to be out there doing it.

i hate school. when i have a positive attitude, i tend to get more done. if i had a bad attitude then i wouldnt come to school and be a failure. when i have a positive attitude about things in life then i am a winner. just like rickey bobbey.

"Don't do whatever you like; like whatever you do." -Anne M.Jennings.
I think that this quote means that you dont always get to do whatever you like, so like what you do. You need to make the best out of everything that you do. For example if you have to go to work, you should go. Dont not go becuase you dont want to, so like whatever you do and enjoy it and it wont be so bad. Your not always going to be able to do everything that you want so make the best out of it and have fun.

I can apply this to my life in many ways. A common occurance where this quote can take place is goingto school. I don't enjoy waking up at six thirty to sit in class all day. I realized though i control my mood. If i want to be happy, i can be happy. So I make the best of it and hang out with friends and such. Schools not ALL that bad...

Conor said...

I think this idea of making the best out of everything is very important. One example of this is when i work. Although i dont really look forward to going in to work to fold clothes and and work the register all night, i usually end up having fun because i make it a point to get along with the people i work with so i dont get bored. I think a lot of people go through life complaining about everything thats difficult, when really they would be much happier if they just made the best of the situation.

Many people see school as something we are forced to do, something that's hard and not very much fun. However, if we would look at school as a priveledge instead of something we have to do, it would be more fun and we would get more out of it. Instead of sleeping in class we would actually learn what we're supposed to be learning. Instead of not doing our work we would get it done and make good grades. If everyone changed their attitude towards school, it would be more fun, and we'd be better at it.

Umm well I don't know what it means but I think you have to like what you do. So if you have a job you should like it and stick with it though ups and downs. Also you should (I think) do what you like. But I have nothing else to say ,so thats it.

Don't do whatever you like; like whatever you do.
It's not easy to do what you have to do but, it is easy to do what you want to do. For an example a few weeks ago I wanted to go to the movies with some of my friends but, my mom wanted me to saty home to baby sit my little brother. I wanted to go to the movies but, my mom had to go to work. So I had to stay home and watch him when I wanted to go hang out with my friends.

I lived in Texas for twelve years; it was home to me. I had many friends, and the majority of my family lived in or around San Antonio, where I lived.
When my parents told me we were moving to Missouri, I was heartbroken. I didn't want to leave this familiar place, or any of my friends or family.
When we first got to Branson, I hated it. It wasn't anything I thouht it would be, and it definitely WASN'T Texas! But I knew that I had to stay positive if I wanted to find any good in my new situation.
Anne M. Jennings said, "Don't do whatever you like; like whatever you do."
I don't love living here, but everything I do, and will do, I know has to be done with a positive attitude.

One instance where this quote comes into mind would be when I do laundry. I dont like doing it but it makes me happy to know that I have clean clothes. So my attitude changes about the whole cituation. Another instance would be when I when I go on vacations and have to ride in the car for long amounts of time. I dont like the long rides but I love it when we reach our destination.

An example of when this quote would play into my life is when i go on long roadtrips with my family. At first i dread the long trip but when i think about what comes after the long drive I get so excited. And there are times that road trips can be a great and fun adventure. My little sister is hilarious, and my mom is right there with her. You can always watch DVD's and stop at convenient stores and get candy. My favorite!

About a month ago my whole family was coming into town to visit and the house was a mess. I had just gotten out of a 4 hour voplleyball practice so cleaing was the last thing that i wanted to do. But then i thought about my mom who had been stressed at work and working lste just to get things done. So I tried to think about her and how tired she would be so i cleaned the entire house! it took me 4 hours but at the end i felt like i had helped my mom out and ended up getting paid for helping! so i guess what I'msaying is that instead of just watching tv i made the best of cleaning and ended up likeing the overall outcome.

For the saying by Anne Jennings, "Don't do whatever you like; like whatever you do." I would say that school would aply. Meaning, that I do not realy injoy school, but I could always look at it a differnt way. I would rather sit arond and sleep allday (wich I like) dosen't mean that I can do it, but I could have a beter attitude about going to school wich I need to begin to like. So, even if I dont like school, I need to do it so I gess I beter begin to like it.

When my parents signed me up to be part of the youth group in my church, I had a negative actitude. I didn't want to be part of it because I thought it would be a waste of time and that it wouldn't be helpful. I was mad with my parents for getting me involved in something without asking me. After a couple of days of being part of the group I started to like it. Now I'm glad my parents got me involved in it because I get to experience new and diffrent things.
Now I try to tell other people to get involved and I like it.

Dont do whatever you like; like whatever you do...? Have I applied this advice in my life? Yes I have. My mom always made me serve food for the poor at church. At first I hated the idea of going but then started to like it. I reliazed that helping other people is a good thing to do. I was happy knowing that i spent some of my time doing good deeds. I had a lot of fun at the same too.

While drawing, I feel a great accomplishment in learning. My favorite times while drawing are when I figure out something new, including how to abstract objects or learn a new drawing technique. My love of drawing can be applied to other aspects of my life; my learning leads to my enjoyment, and my enjoyment of learning leads to my successes. The more I learn, the more I succeed. My accomplishments are my learning experiences.

If you have a good attitude about something, then you will be more inclined to do it. It would be more fun to you. For example, i have a job and usually i dont want to go in to work because i have a bad attitude about it. Now i want to go to work and it seems more fun and i have more fun then when i dont have a good attiude about it.

The most boring chore in the world, dishes. I hate it so much! So one day my dad said for me to do the dishes and i didnt want to at all. I walked in and started unloading the dishwasher, already bored out of my mind. So I had an idea, my dad made me do this, so why not squirt him with icecold water? Random? Yes. As i was cleaning dishes he walks in and asked how I was doing. I said im doing great, then whipped out the water bottle from behind my back and soaked him. It was war. By the end, my house was soaked and so was my dad and I. Even the poor dog. And even better? My dad said he would finish the dishes! But they got clean anyways from the water fight, well sorta. The chore didnt seem that bad anymore.

For instance, this weekend i had all this time and didn't know what to do with it, so i was just going to watch t.v. or go shopping. Though when i went outside i saw how dirty my car was, but didnt feel like washing it. But then i thought of the fun and exercise i would get. I called up my friend and we got in our swimsuits and washed both of our cars and had a blast doing it. In the end we both had awesomely clean cars and a workout all in one.

In my life i have applied this in my life wiht ROTC. I may not like it sometimes but with my attitude i make it better. The reasons i may not like it sometimes would be because of the uniform wear every week, but it is part of my grade so i deal with it and try to make it better for myself. My attitude plays a big part in that because if i wake up and say to myself that i dont want to wear my uniform today then its not going to be a good day. So if i have a good attitude and wake up saying i want to wear my uniform then it makes my day better.

Commander_Lord_Farquad_:D said...

this quote applys to me everyday when i wake up and go to school. i hate school but i try to brain wash myself into liking it, as if there was something i enjoyed about the situation. most of the time this works because half the time i am so to tired to even notice what is going on untill i actually get to school. so that is how this quote applys to me

I have applied going to school in my life. School is something I don't like to go to but I have to attend. Going to school happy and cheerful over all with a good attitude I will have a better day at school and willing to learn more. Make learning fun. School could be better if you also don't stree out about things and just take day by day. Make school fun and have a good time with it.

For instance how I have to work at Country Mart. I used to dread going to work but now that i started to try enjoy work it can be fun. It's fun going to work now cause I am familiar with the people that work there and we talk and have fun at work. And knowing that I get paid to, well now, have fun. See instead of dreading work I now enjoy going to work.

Mr.StuzmanFan60 said...

I think that if you have a positve attitude about something you have to do you might enjoy it more. A great example would be football practice. Nobody likes to go and practice every day, but we know that come friday night it will be worth it. If we come out and practice hard every day then maybe we win some games this year. Hopefully if we come out every day with a good attitude we can accomplish this goal.

More often than not we are told to do things that we dont want to do. But we do them anyway because that is what we are told. For example the other day my mom told me my room was a mess and needed to be cleaned but i really didnt want to do it at all. But then i realized that if my room is clean then it will be easier to find things and i will be much more organized. So even though i didnt want to do it i knew it would be much better if i did. so i listened to my mom and started cleaning and when i did i felt much better about the whole thing.

A good example of this quote that ive experinced is in my dailie job of helping my dad. He works on a horse ranch taking care of 10-12 horses and makes me go with him to help feed, and of all things I dont really like horses all that much. I have to deal with em in animal science cause thats all it basicly deals with and I dont like it much. But I do enjoy going with my dad to the farm because of the few cats that are over. Most of em are really friendly, and im a cat person. so in a way I love to help my dad feed the horses because I know ill have something to do at least while were waiting for the horses to eat, but first gotta get all the horses fed, but I do about 70% of the work from tieing up the horses to feeding and watering em. My dad just fixs feed and cleans stalls

I had to try to like it because at least i had a job and erned money. Then i found a great job in foods at white water. so now i know that i will have a job every summer.

I have applied this quotation to my life many diffrent times. One instance that i remember for sure, was my little cousins birthday at skate world. There was no way my mother wouldn't let me not go. So, I hadn't been there since 4th grade and thought it would be super gay, but I went into it trying to have a good attitude. I ended up having a great time acting like a kid roller skating and eating cake and ice cream.I was glad i put forth an effort to have a great time.

This quote is not one that is very controversial. Almost everyone will agree that it is all about attitude. If you're optomistic, then you are going to make any situation better. However, if you are cynical then any day can start to suck.

I can apply this to my life when my parents got divorsed. I tryed having a good mood about it all because if I didn't then I would be in a bad mood about it all. It's hard to be positive about something like that, but I just look at it as, now I know my parents are happy so that makes me happy too. Having a positive attiude makes it easier to deal with the whole thing better. If I wasn't positive then I wouldn't be a happy person like I am now.

Once upon a time, when I was taking a skills exam, something terrible happened.
I put the key in the ignition, and turned it. I pulled forward and commenced the exam.
When it was all said and done, the instructor looked at me with an inquisitive glare. She said to me, "son your driving was perfect, but there is only one problem, your traffic checks are terrible, therefore you shall not pass".
So I didn't pass.

As we were driving we started singing and semi-trucks honked at us! So, my sister made me have a fun drive to Florida. That's how don't do whatever i like; i like whatever i do.

I can apply this to my life when my mom made me, my sister and my brother move away from my dad. My mom was happy about it because she didn't like how he was always abusing himself with alcohol. My sister and I kind of felt the same about him when we left. We both felt like our mom was doing the right thing, but at the same time, we thought she was taking a part of our lives from us. My brother was the worst out of all of us. He was the one who always hung out with him, and went fishing with him and BBQed. All of us kids felt so mad, and sad, about the whole situation, but at the same time we know that our mom was protecting us from becoming what our father became. To this day, we all miss our dad...we just don't miss the alcoholic part of him.

This quote applies to my everyday life. I have recently started studying for my classes every night after school or work. Even though I would absolutely love to go home from school and relax I don't, however, I make the most of studying and try to enjoy it as best as anyone can. If I go through the whole day dreading homework, there's a pretty good chance I'll not do it. Whereas,if I go through the day thinking it won't be that bad there's a pretty good chance I'll do the homework.

An example of where your attitude makes a hudge difference is when you move to another town and you have to start a new school. I switched school's this year and I wasn't the happiest person in the world. When you have been somewhere for a long period of time you get used to your surroundings and everything starts to become a routine to you. You get used to certain things and a certain way of life. You develope not only close friedships but also great friends. Sometimes those great friends seem to go from being friends to becoming like family to you. Then all of a sudden you move. You start a new way of life even if your not to thrilled about the idea you should go into it with a positive attitude. Especially when you start a new school. It is never easy to start a new school, but it is easyer to start a new school when your younger than it is when you get older and are in High School. But you have to make the best out of every situation you will be fine and you'll also do fine. If you think negative things like I'm not going to make any friends and I wont make good grades than you won't. If you are positive and have a good attitude everything will be just fine.

This doesn't have to be as complicated as some of you tried to make it; nor do journal entries, or even quotations for that matter, have to be controversial to inspire critical thinking. You all have proved that mere reflection on your attitude can allow tremendous insights into your thoughts and lives. Thanks for sharing!! :)

I think this should apply to everything. Life sucks most of the time when you have to go to school, work, or do a lot of other things that you just have to do. Look at the bright side, at least your getting somewhere. Things go so much better when you try to enjoy what you're doing. You might eventually regret not trying to do things better. So just try to be happy when you do the things you have to do because you have to do them.

Dollface said...

Doing what you like to do can limit you to a few certain things in your life, even more so if you don't like to do very much. However, you can always learn to like what you do if you try hard enough and stay positive about the situation. As teens, there are many things we do in our lives that we don't enjoy doing, such as; chores, going to school, working, homework, etc. When we do these things, we are so concentrated on the fact that we do not like doing them, that we forget to try and like them more. By doing this, it makes doing the boring and uneventful things seem to drag on and on and we will never enjoy them. If we put it into our minds that doing these things isn't actually that bad, we will like doing them more and they will get done easier, making us like more of the things that we do.

I also had other plans that i really wanted to do, but i went anyway. Once we got there the kids ran around like crazy and getting in the way. So i took al the kids off to the sides and started playing games with them. We played up till it was time to go. When i got home i realized how important it was for me to go because it inabled the dads to work better and get more done. Then i realized how important the finishing of the room was for the couple, and it made me feel better because even thought i didnt want to go I was able to help out a lot of people, and also i happened to have some fun in the meantime....

That was probably the best snow day ever for me!

It's easier to look out the window then it is in the mirror! or a paraphrase from the bible "don't criticize the speck in your nieghbor's eye while ignoring the beam in your's". it has always been easier to judge others before you judge yourself!

the other day i was at the grocery store i had bought all my items and was going out to load them in the car and i saw an elderly lady that had a hunched back and was wincing. So i went overto her and she was kind of timid at first but i asked her if i could help her load her groceries into her car and she said yes and thank you young lady.i felt good that i had helped her out and saved her a little pain that day.

Honestly my mother, even though she died before i was five, she has influenced me in so many ways that are indescribable i would not know amy of the things i do now if she had not. She taught one of the biggest lessons in life and that is live life to the fullest cause it could end when you least expect it!

i played a great trick on my mom for april fools. my mother places orders for prom tuxedos. so i had one of my friends pretend to be the company and say that there was a problem with the computers and the orders she placed were all canceled she flipped out then we told her it was a joke and we all laughed after she almost strangled me.lolol

i think really to understand DEPRESSION you must break it down into three words "DEP" "RES" "SION". i don't think we will ever know what they mean seperatly but all together it makes a pretty cool sounding word.

i do not believe that the novel changed my impression of the war i think all war is wrong and i believe i will always think that. With war comes hate and there can be no love when there is hate. i will remember what a war story is never moral and that why i think war is wrong because war is not moral. i learned that war is not moral further proving my point that it is wrong and that the men that went there and survived when they came back were changed completely, you can't un-see things and the things they saw were horrifying, and one can only imagined what an image of such death could do to you.

I want to be remembered as the honest girl, the one who always spoke her mind. funny, blunt, and obvious. i want to be a lover not a fighter a winner not a loser and always funny. i do believe i have almost accomplished all of this but im not for sure....i hope so though.
